"Combining great design and sustainability, here’s an architect creating modern modular buildings that are a perfect fit for New Zealand landscapes and lifestyles…" Growing up and studying in South Africa, award-winning architect Andre Hodgskin absorbed diverse and exotic architectural influences. Thoughtful and deliberate, he describes gaining his strongest impressions from other far-away places: the earthy sensuousness of Portuguese-influenced buildings in Mozambique, and the (literally) groundbreaking works of now centagenarian Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who designed his country’s extraordinary capital city, Brasilia. Moving to New Zealand fifteen years ago, Hodgskin’s unique South African experiences gave him a fresh perspective on New Zealand’s architectural potential. The challenges of new materials and construction methods also fuelled his creativity. “Although they were completely unfamiliar to start with, New Zealand’s lighter building materials gave me a degree of freedom, and allowed me to design buildings that would ‘float’ in the landscape.” Always fascinated by modular constructions and quick to pick up on Kiwis' love of the bach, Hodgskin put the new materials to work and was soon receiving acclaim for his revolutionary Bachkit. Now he’s taking modular design a step further with the compact and stylish iPad. |
