Multi-talented artist, designer, art director, Gaz Smith is not afraid to have a little fun... and poke fun at himself. Originally from the Old Country, Gaz now calls Aotaeroa home. And like many from far away, he brings a fresh pair of eyes on what makes NewZiilind tick. The confluence of cultures, colonial and local, is seen in his work "Bloody English"... where New Zealand is seen to be reclaiming the land from the colonial power.
Apart from that he enjoys the illusions that constantly confront us... " Everyday we are asked to believe in images we know to be lies. Ever so momentarily allow yourself to believe something that simply isn't true. And enjoy it." In his series "Supension of Disbelief" his long-held passion for darts he invites you believe in what you see but know is not real. Could this be the result of his time in advertising?
And Gaz is not afraid to reveal himself through his work. The short fuse of a match when it goes off represents his own "short fuse". Either oversized or in massive numbers, his 'matches' series invite us to confront our own shortcomings.
