Jo Blogg

Artist - Hawkes Bay

"Jo's compulsion for detail and precision produces Mandalas of intense beauty."

From the outside, Jo Blogg’s cottage looks like a quaint old Grandma’s house, but inside it’s a riot of artwork. Paintings adorn the walls and sculptural objects fill every spare surface and corner. Jo works with any material imaginable, painting and arranging everything from milk bottles to teapots, to rice and seeds into patterns and decorative forms. Ordinary domestic objects are a favourite. Whimsical sculptures are concocted from wooden spoons and milk bottles painted with bright jigsaw puzzle patterns. In Jo’s lounge, three large white jigsaw puzzles are emblazoned with a lemon squeezer, a frying pan and a rolling pin – symbols of domesticity reinvented as art.
Jo reckons she’s extremely obsessive: “I have no patience with people, but I can do tedious tasks quite happily – I find the work very peaceful.” Jo’s newest artworks are exquisite mandalas painted onto perspex sheets and CD cases. When we visit, her latest perspex mandala is underway on the kitchen table. Each one takes endless hours of concentration, with the intricate patterns patiently painted one dot at a time. Light imparts the mandalas with jewel-like brilliance, creating unexpected beauty from the ordinary.
