"Serious style and scrupulous attention to detail capture the essence of New Zealand’s maritime setting in imaginative furniture from a dedicated artisan…" Like many Kiwis, Kennedy Brown has fond memories of a childhood filled with good times outdoors, mucking about in boats or fishing from a local wharf. ‘His’ wharf was on the edge of Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour, where he remembers gazing between rough planks at the rippling green water below, waiting for the fish to bite. Now, he blends nostalgic memories like this with painstaking workmanship and Pacific and maritime influences to create clever and finely crafted furniture. The impression of the wharf near his childhood home is vividly captured in his simple but elegant Little Jetty tables. Available in two sizes - coffee table and side table - Little Jetty is finished in sustainable and highly durable bamboo panelling. Kennedy carries the maritime theme of his designs into construction, using interlocking timber elements and laboriously hand-lashed stainless steel wire to assemble the pieces. Many of the forms he creates reflect Pacific tapa cloth-like patterns, an effect accentuated by the straight grain of bamboo. Currently working from Cicada Studios furniture design incubator, Kennedy Brown aims to explore and capture aesthetics from the past, reinventing them with a modern twist to give them purpose and beauty. This goal is stunningly realised in his Celebrant’s chair with book table - originally commissioned for a South Auckland church. Crafted in traditional oak and native matai timbers, these, like all of the works that Kennedy produces display a thoughtful design aesthetic and his scrupulous attention to detail.
