Kiri Schumacher

Jewellery Designer - Auckland

"Plants of Aotearoa distilled to their purest form in silver and gold."

Kowhai, Fuchia, Pohutukawa, Rengarenga, Koromiko and many more of New Zealand's flora are realised in Kiri Schmacher's work.  Kiri enjoys refining structure back to its simplest form and draws inspiration from small plant details such as leaves, buds and pods. Kiri focuses on one aspect of a design to draw out the essence of its shape, like smoothed bone, rock, and shell worn back to elemental forms. Other pieces have a filigree style, drawing associations with the fairytale aesthetic of childhood books, and a corresponding sense of the delicate and feminine.
Kiri’s interest in jewellery developed as she was finishing her formal training in 2002 (in Art History and Fine Arts and majoring in sculpture at Elam). She has been making jewellery ever since. She delights in its ability to meld so readily into our lives, warmed by our bodies, constantly touched and re-applied. Kiri has a fond relationship with the various metals of her craft and their temperaments when heated, shaped, hammered and carved. Jewellery tools themselves have also endeared themselves to her – the miniature hammers, diamond tipped drill bits, and tiny saw blades and files.
