"What the "..." has Lindsay done to Nana's tea cups?" The gentle clink of china teacups once punctuated polite conversation in homes up and down the New Zealand. Often given as a wedding present, the tea set was central to refined New Zealand social life. The advent of tea bags, coffee culture and our frenetic pace of life have made the tea set a quaint relic of bygone days. For Lindsay Pemberton the tea set is a source of inspiration. A fascination with simple domestic rituals like brewing a pot of tea led her to experiment with vintage teacups found in second hand shops. By dissecting them with a diamond saw, she’s given them a new lease of life as highly attractive and surprisingly strong Tea Bangles. Lindsay graduated from Unitec with a degree in art and design. Her products are designed to challenge preconceptions about everyday objects and social rituals. By reinventing traditional domestic objects as jewellry she gives them new meaning. In the same range as the Tea Bangles, Lindsay’s delicate Heart Pendants are made by joining two cup handles to form a heart. Her brand, ‘Rekindle’ reflects recycling the old and unloved and making it cherished again. |
