Playing on the angular tailfins of classic 1950’s cars, Roger Kelly originally designed his Speed Chair as a bit of a piss-take. Its swift-looking shape implys speed, yet its occupant remains quite stationary, and very comfortable.  The result, constructed in hoop pine ply and pale ash timber, is something very special.
As an artist and designer, Roger launched RedOrange Design Ltd. in 2006 to develop products that emphasise functionality and sustainability, while challenging ideas of how we live and work. Based at the Cicada Studios design incubator since 2005, Roger produces a wide range of furniture as well as colourful floor rugs.
Roger's ten years of experience as an engraver are featured in the subtle detailing of table tops and cabinet doors with elegant shapes inspired by New Zealand’s native plants and flowers. Many pieces like Speed Chair are specifically designed to fit into the contemporary beach/apartment life style, while all combine practicality with his high standards of design and finish.
Meanwhile, Speed chair has got us planning a clear out and a garage sale down here at Clever Bastard’s HQ. We love it – all we need is somewhere to put one…
