Sarah Backler achieves the seemingly impossible in her ceramics. How does a beaker have a square base but a round top? With concentric circle texture imbedded in its surface. And the effect is almost Escheresque. Sarah's work is beautiful, simple and elegant, yet also has contradicting angles. She makes objects that beg to be picked up and used, and also admired. Sarah combines technical difficulty with the uniqueness of hand-crafting. Her background in industrial design exposes her to the intricacies and accuracies in computer-aided design and how complex design anomalies can be overcome. Add to that the subtleties of casting and finishing each object by hand, be it the slightly imperfect circle or the varying intensity of the glaze, and you have pieces that describe the personality of the maker.
