Simon Edmonds

Jewellery Designer - Wellington

"Precious artifacts fly from the garden shed"

Simon first became interested in design while living in England in the 90s and exploring the galleries and design shops of Soho. He soon was making individually designed and crafted mirrors, lamps and other objects, and exhibiting in Oxford galleries. On returning to New Zealand, he began to think more commercially, developing the range of handles and tableware. But he missed working with individual pieces, and so turned to jewellery.
Making jewellery makes it possible for Simon to be continually creating something new, and allows him to work with a level of detail and originality that is only possible with one-off designs. He is interested in finding innovative ways of working with both conventional and unconventional materials. His recent work explores concepts to do with value, using conventionally precious materials alongside materials that are usually considered of no value to create works in which the value lies primarily in the artistry and thinking. Simon lives in Island Bay, Wellington, with poet Anna Jackson and their two children, and works from a shed he built himself in the back of a sprawling garden.
