Stuart Fyfe

Ceramic Artist - Coromandel

"The fingertips tell the brain what's going on - the rest is pyrotechnics and good luck!"

Stuart Fyfe moved to the Coromandel five years ago. He was attracted to the tranquillity of the place. Stuart creates sculptural pieces: large bowls and wheel-thrown pots that reflect the natural world outside the door of his plain ply-lined studio.
Stuart reckons there are no certainties in ceramics – the glazes he mixes take one or two firings to reveal their true colours on his works of terracotta and stoneware. The shapes he creates are guided by feel and inspired by natural forms in the surrounding bush: leaves, eels and shells. Stuart trusts his hands and fingertips, working the soft clay to tell him what to do. His method produces works with distinctive organic forms and subtle details that, as he puts it, 'enhance the flow of the pots.'
