Meeting Tanya at Fidel's on Wellington's Cuba Street was like meeting a wonderful but weird family. Covering the table and seated in the chairs was a wonderful array of her creatures. And like most interesting families each member has a story to tell...
Tanya tells tales through her creative processes, from sculpting creatures at Weta Workshop for Lord of the Rings or Aardman Productions, to creating toy characters inspired by time on Maude Island while on a DOC/Creative New Zealand "wild creations" residency, to upcycling materials into dolls or brooches, and to creating dolls that are more art for adults than kids. No cuddly teddies, cute dolls or everyday toys for Tanya, they break the paradigms of the mass-productive toy world, who churn out the expected.
Tanya is also an award-winning World of Wearable Art artist with five of her garments in the permanent collection. She currently balances her creature and toy design with Lecturing Digital Media design at Massey University.
