Roger Kelly wins again! Roger Kelly scores again winning the annual Design/Make Furniture Design Competition curated by the Waiheke Island Community Art Gallery.

Running for the third year, this years theme was to construct a sideboard, balancing the storage and display aspects.

The winning entry titled “Renovation” is constructed entirely of sustainable Radiata Pine to echo the structural elements of the Kiwi weatherboard home. The design challenges our perception of indoor/ outdoor flow by bringing traditionally exterior materials inside.

Award Selector Tom Skyring said of the work, "I really admire its total honesty, and its wonderful look of New Zealand. It is beautifully constructed and would fit well into many aspects of New Zealand’s casual environment, as a free standing island unit or as a smart kitchen bench unit. Its possibilities for usage are endless.” To check out Roger's other work click here.

Another Clever Bastard, Kennedy Brown was also a finalist with his restrained but beautiful sideboard, "Balance & Brace". It's "Polynesian sailing craft" aesthetic combined with modern materials is expressed in the interlocking elements, using stainless steel threaded rod to lash the slats to the supporting beam. The lower shelf is supported by the larger structure. This sculptural piece is crafted in Ash and finished shellac and wax.

This is an ongoing theme for Kennedy. Check out his other work here.

The Design/Make exhibition runs until 1 September 2008.
