Barnet Burns(c November 1805 - 26 December 1860) was an English sailor who became one of the first Europeans to live as a Pākehā Māori and to receive the full Māori facial tattoo. Pākehā Māori is a term used to describe early European settlers who lived among the Māori. Some were kept as slaves, many being runaway seamen or escaped convicts. Some achieved a degree of prestige among Māori and fought in battle with their adopted tribe in the New Zealand land wars, sometimes against European soldiers. Burns returned to Europe in 1835 and where he described the customs of the Māori, performed the haka, exhibited his Māori tattoos and recounted his adventures in New Zealand
