I create the original insect- usually a mixture of collage and drawing. Each insect is individually screen printed and then hand painted on to upcycled weatherboards, or paper, and then framed as if archived in a museum boxed collection.
The use of weatherboard started as a play on the old, Kiwi 1950s trend of butterflies on a weatherboard house idea and is an integral part of the work. As this is set in a particular time and place, it led me to developing the artwork as museum boxed collections, archived in a social and historical context, and then layered with other personal references with collage and word."
A blue moon is the second full moon when any two full moons occur in one month. Sitings of the Blue Moon butterfly are rare and special as it is not common in New Zealand. It comes and goes, like a lover, waxing and waning, like the moon pulling the waters and releasing the tides, spinning through phases of dark and light. Caught here, like a memory, preserved in time and context, as if in a museum collection, to become something constant and true.
