I had a Golly when I was a little boy and I loved it the most. I was very hurt when he was made an evil, racist character as he was part of my family. Golly was an employer and paid Noddy good wages, he was a business owner and got angry at Noddy for tooting the horns in his garage instead of working. Why shouldn't he tell Noddy off? Why wasn't he allowed to be drawn as angry? Why is it okay for a White employer to shout at Noddy instead? Paul Holmes was taken to the gallows for making an ironic comment about a Cheeky Little Darkie. This popular image asks for common sense and erudite propositions rather than nonsense. Calling someone a Wog might be racist but, like the Maori Rugby team, Golly is a racially defined cuddly children's toy and story book character, that is all. I still have a Golly, as do my nephews and grand nephews. So here he walks in the NZ landscape...naughty little Golly!
