I am a big early Elvis fan. His style of music, flair for fashion and slick moves influenced me greatly as a young fella. I actually thought he was part maori as he had similar features and his skin toned looked similar. The other factor which convinced me of this was his musical talent. How he rocked the guitar, moved his hips and rolled out those sweet lyrics just seemed so maori. His fashion style influenced my early clothing designs and his hair style become a guideline for the perfect do. Elvis is the start of a series entitled 'the study of coolness', where I illustrate those icons that had an effect on my development. Elvis is the meaning of 'cool'. 1956 was the year he was at his coolest, 1999 was my year of coolness. The moko refers to his musical talents, his connection with my being maori and love of whanau. Maybe one day we can share a deep fried banana and peanut butter sandwich.
