NZ Map CD Cover Painting |
'BANDWAGON’ - a set of kiwiana images painted in dots.
Jo's newest artworks are a somewhat cynical take on the not-so-newfound popularity of all thigs "Kiwiana". She's quite deliberate in choosing the iconic symbols like the 4 Square Man, the Tiki, the map of New Zealand and Pania of her home town, Napier. They are even executed as silhouettes, still being easily recognisable. But she adds another dimension by using CD cases as her medium, another ubiquitous item. And like her exquisite mandalas, she has painstakingly, some might say obsesively, painted them onto the inside back surface of the front cover. Each one takes endless hours of concentration, with the formss patiently painted one dot at a time. Jo works in "reverse", starting with the foremost layer of paint, ending with the background. A series of backward layers, another one the "inside back of the front" of a CD case, are contradictions Jo enjoys.
Light, passing through the clear plastic imparts the images with extra brilliance, creating unexpected beauty from the ordinary.
The works, again like the music CD's they normally carry, can be collected as a series and displayed as such. The collective effect is greater than sum of the parts..
