These pieces are part of a range of work that explores concepts of value. Some pieces in this range are set with kauri gum, which, when it was discovered by the first colonial settlers, set off a kauri "gold rush," with prospecting for kauri gum taking off before any actual use of value was established for the gum. To me, the value of kauri gum is partly aesthetic, and partly a result of its history and its relation to a curious transitional period in economic history. Other shapes appear as empty vessels, inviting reflection on the move towards investing value in things that do not even materially exist. They might also suggest transmitting devices.
